Here's a use of Social Media that some companies might prefer did not exist.
Glassdoor.com is an information sharing site which encourages postings by current and former employees of companies about pay scale, management, working conditions, interview questions and more. What's somewhat unique is you can obtain an overall rating on the current CEO and compare rankings between different companies that might be in the same industry.
The site claims to index over 23,000 different companies and it works on a "give to get" basis. In order to be able to read reviews - you must post one yourself. The site requires email verification and claims that all posts are reviewed prior to going live in order to reduce the potential for fraudulent comments or data.
It could be argued that the results are biased since most people who take the time to post may be disgruntled former employees. However the ability to compare different companies in the same industries is compelling and the site seems to have been up since June 2007 based on this Crunchbase article which also estimates around 300,000 monthly unique visitors:
